Winter of Will 8

Winter of Will 8

description

Machine stitched paper, H8.75"xW6” Winter of Will works are woven of paper after collecting and slicing the paper rags used to clean my oil paint brushes. The challenge of the material and technique underlines the endurance and strong will required to accomplish the work. At the same time, its formal aspect - paper, fabric, thread stains, and traces - communicates fragility and domesticity. The stained paper is reminiscent of wound wrapping. I reuse my "creative history" as well as tools and material to incite an alternative creative process and to rehabilitate the invisible and gentle daily tasks women perform which demand fierce actions such as slicing, piercing, processing, restructuring –actions characteristic (or cliché) of male activities. In Winter of Will, the needle is a weapon, the seamstress a warrior.
