Praiadise Origami Book Sculpture

Praiadise Origami Book Sculpture

description

Mixed media on paper & wood, Approx. 17 in. x 8 in. x 8 in. 1 Original, unique artwork + Limited Edition of 10 (w/ special hand-embellishments & collage). This origami sculpture was created during a longterm Artist Residency Program & Fellowship (funded by the US Embassy Praia in collaboration with the Luxembourg Ambassador) in the Cape Verde Islands. The origami sculptures created during this adventure were directly inspired by the remarkable natural landscapes of this varied archipelago, not to mention full immersion into the local cultural & musical scenes (where the Artist conducted various workshops, concluding in a solo exhibit in the capital city of Praia). Gerakaris' origami sculptures feature organic, abstract, and dreamlike imagery meticulously folded into sculptural forms that encourage viewer participation. Typically displayed on mirrored plinths, ever-changing reflections reveal multiple perspectives while encouraging viewers to play with the many possible display configurations. While each work is a self-contained “micro-sculpture”, small figurines also indicate the artist’s ultimate vision to transform these works into large-scale public sculptures & pavilions. Origami sculptures such as these have been featured in many international exhibits including both the 2013 + 2019 Mykonos Biennale in Greece, LongHouse Reserve (Long Island, NY), Wave Hill (NYC), iSolAIR (Cape Verde Islands, Africa) & AHM Gallery (Taipei, Taiwan), in addition to institutional collections such as the Schomburg Center (NYC) and the William Lim Living Collection (Hong Kong, China). A selection of these sculptures will also be showcased in a forthcoming hardcover book by Jean-Charles Trebbi dedicated to origami art books, to be published by Les Editions Alternatives in Paris.
