Floating Garden at The Surrey Rooftop Garden
Floating Garden is a site-specific, mixed-media installation by Peter D. Gerakaris commissioned for The Surrey’s Rooftop Garden in NYC. Dimensions variable. Curated by ArtMuse Founder Natasha Schlesinger, Gerakaris’ solo project was included in ArtSpeak previews during Frieze Week NY 2016. A grand unveiling followed on May 20th, which marked the opening of the rooftop season. The installation remained on view through the end of October, 2016. The artwork was conceived as a site-sensitive call & response with its environment unifying key elements of the garden, sky, & cityscape. The Artist worked closely with landscape design firm Rebecca Cole Grow to coordinate elements of the imagery with garden plantings as botanical blooms progressed from spring through late autumn. The artist also embedded his signature Bee, all but concealing this creature's form as a "ghost" pollinator silhouette camouflaged into the imagery - a reference to the alarming disappearance of the worker bee due to Colony Collapse Disorder. In response to this magical pollinator, the rooftop's resident mixologist created a special cocktail menu based on organic honey to be enjoyed as guests as they witnessed the buzzing of real bees amidst the installation's lavender plantings.
