Biography
With a psychology background, Hsiao-Chu Hsia, also Julia Hsia, focuses on relational art and the development of the psychology of art/ psychological art which is based on Gestalt psychology. After pursuing her Master’s degree in Community Arts at Maryland Institute College of Art, she is now working as a freelance artist in the New York City area. Julia sees art as a medium that has the ability to raise awareness of social issues mildly. She tends to utilize body language and interactions in her performances in order to create a mind-open space in order to invite the audiences to not only think but to have a conversation about the message she gives out. Especially when it comes to sensitive topics, it is important to hear and respect different voices through the process. As an artist, activist, and educator, Julia values the time that an artist spends on building relationships with communities. Connecting with people by art-making is a way how she learns and becomes a part of people.
